You (hopefully) already know that you need to be wearing sunscreen 365 days a year, rain or shine, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. You also really should be moisturizing daily (yes, no matter your skin type). So while you can, by all means, split these two non-negotiables into two separate steps and products, why not make your life that much easier by combining both? Enter the beauty of a moisturizer with SPF—truly, the only product you need to apply in the morning.
When choosing a good one, there are a few key things to look for. First and foremost, it should offer broad-spectrum sun protection, meaning it shields your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. On the moisturizer side of things, seek out non-comedogenic formulas that you know won’t clog pores, advises New York City board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marina Peredo. Bonus points if they contain antioxidants, which will act as a second layer of defense against skin-damaging free radicals, she adds.
Ahead, the best moisturizers with SPF, including options that are tinted, anti-aging, super gentle, and more.
Best Overall: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30
Gentle on skin
Helps fade dark spots
Dermatologists and beauty editors alike are obsessed with this French pharmacy favorite—and with good reason. “It’s great as a daily facial moisturizer for all skin types since it is oil-free and non-comedogenic,” says Peredo. She also lauds it for the combination of ceramide-3, niacinamide, and glycerin, plus the brand's prebiotic thermal water—a combination meant to both hydrate the skin and help restore its natural barrier.
It’s the last ingredient that’s especially interesting for New York City dermatologist Dr. Rita Linkner, who’s also a fan, and points out that it helps to maintain the delicate balance of flora on the skin. Of course, this product is also a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, ensuring protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

Best Multitasker: bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer
Uses mineral sunscreen
Very lightweight formula
Hydrates and soothes skin
Not for very oily skin
It's not always obvious to think of tinted moisturizer as lightweight, but this option from bareMinerals definitely fits the bill. Its gel-cream hybrid formula feels cool and refreshing upon application and is packed with hydrating squalene, marine botanicals, and mineral electrolytes. And because it's SPF 30, it checks off three boxes—makeup, skincare, and sun protection—at once.
“It’s a great multi-tasking moisturizer with SPF, sheer coverage, and is non-comedogenic,” says Peredo, who gives it two thumbs up. Not to mention that it’s the only pick on this list that relies on a mineral sunscreen ingredient, a boon for anyone who might experience irritation from chemical sunscreen ingredients. Plus, it's available in 20 shades to accommodate a wide range of skin tones. In other words, sign us up.

Best for Sensitive Skin: Olay Complete Daily Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30
Gives skin a glow
Blends nicely into skin
Contains mineral oil
Got sensitive skin? Olay Complete Lotion Moisturizer with SPF 30 Sensitive has your name on it. This gentle, oil- and fragrance-free moisturizer hydrates and calms easily irritated skin while protecting it from the sun. The white lotion has zinc oxide meant for gentle mineral protection, plus other skin-coddling ingredients including vitamin E and aloe extract. Peredo is an especially big fan of the addition of that vitamin E: “It helps combat free radicals from the effects of the environment and reduce sun damage, ensures long-lasting moisture retention, and also has anti-aging properties that can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles,” she explains. It also has a surprisingly lightweight texture and rubs in easily without irritation.

Best for Dry Skin: Supergoop! Sunscreen Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 40
Protects against blue light
Can be hard to blend into skin
“This product is great for those who want a little higher of an SPF for their faces,” says Linkner. It’s also a super nice pick if you have dry skin, as it touts glycerin, a humectant that attracts water and holds it in the skin. Still, it feels pleasantly whipped and bouncy, never greasy. A unique blend of antioxidants (including blue-green algae and safflower extract, just to name a few) is worth calling out as well. They are meant to offer not only more protection from the sun and pollution but also the blue light emitted from electronic devices.
Active Ingredients: Avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate | Skin Type: Dry | Size: 1.7 ounces | SPF: 40 | Cruelty-Free?: Yes | Byrdie Clean?: Yes
Best for Oily Skin: Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30
Peredo calls this out as a great option for anyone with oily or acne-prone skin: “The formula relies on micropearl technology to help hydrate, while also absorbing oil to leave behind a matte finish,” she says. (So yeah, that whole ‘sunscreen makes my skin look greasy’ excuse isn’t going to fly.) Silica and zinc further help keep excess sheen and oil under control, and it also touts calming allantoin and licorice extract to soothe any irritation or redness and prevent future discoloration.
Active Ingredients: Avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene | Skin Type: Acne-prone, oily | Size: 4 ounces | SPF: 30 | Cruelty-Free?: No | Byrdie Clean?: No
Best for Combination Skin: Paula's Choice Resist Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50
Contains soothing antioxidants
May not hydrate enough for dry skin
Finding the right moisturizer when you have combination skin can make you feel like Goldilocks—some are too hydrating, others not hydrating enough. Luckily, this formula strikes the best balance. The water-light texture imparts a matte finish, though it still delivers enough hydration to quench any dry patches. The SPF 50 is a nice benefit, higher than what you’ll find in many other moisturizers with SPF, as are plenty of antioxidants and skin-soothing chamomile extract.
Active Ingredients: Avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene | Skin Type: Oily, combo | Size: 2 ounces | SPF: 50 | Cruelty-Free?: Yes | Byrdie Clean?: Yes
Best for Hyperpigmentation: Bolden SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer
Offers several different benefits
Clean and cruelty-free
Helps fade hyperpigmentation
Vitamin C can irritate sensitive skin
You can use every skin tone-evening product under the sun, but if you’re not also using sunscreen simultaneously, all of your efforts will be futile. (Let’s not forget that the sun is a major culprit behind discoloration.) Happily, this combines both spot-fading properties, that necessary dose of SPF, and is pleasantly moisturizing as well. Plus, the vitamin C that helps to combat discoloration even pulls double-duty in and of itself, also acting as a hydrator.

Developed by derms and plastic surgeons, it relies on a combo of anti-aging ingredients meant to help combat fine lines, wrinkles, pores, and more, all while hydrating, protecting your skin from the sun, and blurring away the look of any discoloration and blemishes. On that note, it also packs some heavy-hitting coverage, almost more akin to a foundation (it comes in 12 shades).

It comes in two deep shades, neither of which will leave behind even a trace of ashiness or white residue.

Linkner also recommends this product which she says is great for daily use, offering the best amount of hydration and ideal SPF level. But the benefits don’t stop there. She calls it, “an antioxidant-packed topical product,” relying on beet and grape extracts meant to help ward off skin-damaging (and aging) free radicals. On top of that, it also contains peptides meant to help combat fine lines, sagging, prominent pores, and other signs of aging.

A daily moisturizer with SPF is one of the best skincare products you can incorporate into your daily routine. The La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer UV SPF 30 (view at Ulta) is our overall favorite pick, a great choice for all skin types that’s ultra-hydrating but still lightweight. If your skin is on the very dry end of the spectrum, don’t miss the Supergoop! Sunscreen Daily Moisturizer SPF 40 (view at Sephora), filled with hydrating ingredients and boasting a whipped texture. For those with sensitive skin, the Olay Complete Lotion Moisturizer with SPF 30 (view at Amazon) gets our vote, a gentle, fragrance-free, formula. Finally, the Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30 (view at Amazon) is ideal if you have oily skin, as it promises to absorb excess sebum but still hydrate and protect.
Although using a moisturizer with SPF can help protect your skin, most dermatologists agree that a moisturizer with SPF isn't enough for all-day coverage. It's recommended that you reapply every two hours as well as after sweating or swimming—though another option to consider is layering a moisturizer underneath sunscreen and reapplying that sunscreen throughout the day.
What to Look for in a Moisturizer With SPF
Paramount for any SPF product, whether a full-body sunscreen or a simple facial moisturizer with added sun protection, be sure to look out for products that offer broad-spectrum protection. This will indicate that the formula guards against both UVA and UVB rays, which is essential for protecting the skin from sunburns, cancer, and signs of aging.
Non-Comedogenic and Oil-Free
When it comes to moisturizers with SPF, Peredo says it’s imperative to seek out formulas that are both non-comedogenic and oil-free. This way, you can be assured the product you’re choosing won’t likely clog pores or trigger breakouts.
Skin Barrier-Strengthening Ingredients
SPF or not, a face lotion must help to protect and strengthen your skin, too. By helping to maintain a strong and healthy skin barrier, ingredients such as ceramides and niacinamide help to lock in hydration and prevent irritants from getting in, according to Peredo, so keep your eye out for formulas containing these ingredients.
Can you use a moisturizer with SPF at night?
According to Dr. Frauke Neuser, the Senior Director of Scientific Communications at Olay, there aren't any downsides to using a moisturizer with SPF at night, though it likely won't have any particular benefits. “Your skin would probably benefit more from a moisturizer designed for night use,” she adds.
Do moisturizers with SPF cause acne?
According to Dr. Neuser, moisturizers with SPF don’t necessarily cause acne, but there are two factors that may contribute to sunscreen-related breakouts: clogged pores from comedogenic ingredients or sensitivity to chemical UV filters. “So, make sure you use a product that’s non-comedogenic or a mineral sunscreen if you know you’re sensitive to chemical UV filters,” she says.
Do moisturizers with SPF protect the skin enough?
Moisturizers with SPF are definitely still protective, but there are differences that are important to understand. “Moisturizers with SPF are tested to the same standard as specialized sunscreen products, so they provide the same level of UV protection,” says Dr. Neuser. “The main difference is that they usually aren’t waterproof or water-resistant, which is why you’d want to use a specialized sunscreen when you’re on the beach, exercising outdoors, etc.”
